ഏറ്റവും കൂടുതൽ ഭക്തരെത്തുന്ന ലോകത്തിലെതന്നെ ഏറ്റവും വലിയ ക്ഷേത്രങ്ങളിലൊന്നാണ് ശബരിമല.
ഏകദേശം മൂന്നു കോടിയിലധികം പേരാണ് ഓരോ വർഷവും ഇവിടം സന്ദർശിക്കുന്നത്. ചിലപ്പോൾ അത് അഞ്ചു കോടിയും കടന്നിരുന്നു.
കേരളത്തിലെ പത്തനംതിട്ട ജില്ലയിൽ റാന്നി താലൂക്കിൽ റാന്നി-പെരുനാട് ഗ്രാമപഞ്ചായത്തിൽ പശ്ചിമഘട്ടത്തിന്റെ ഭാഗമായ പെരിയാർ കടുവ സംരക്ഷിത പ്രദേശത്തിൽ സ്ഥിതിചെയ്യുന്ന ഒരു പ്രസിദ്ധമായ ഹൈന്ദവ തീർത്ഥാടന കേന്ദ്രമാണ് ശബരിമല അയ്യപ്പക്ഷേത്രം
ഹരിഹരപുത്രനായ (മഹാവിഷ്ണു , മഹാദേവൻ)അയ്യപ്പനാണ് ഇവിടുത്തെ പ്രതിഷ്ഠ. മാളികപ്പുറത്തമ്മ എന്നു പേരുള്ള ശക്തിസ്വരൂപിണിയായ ഒരു ഭഗവതി സങ്കല്പവും തുല്യപ്രാധാന്യത്തിൽ കുടികൊള്ളുന്നു. ഉപദേവതകളായി കന്നിമൂല ഗണപതി,വാവരുസ്വാമി, വലിയ കടുത്തസ്വാമി, കൊച്ചു കടുത്തസ്വാമി, കറുപ്പുസ്വാമി, നവഗ്രഹങ്ങൾ, നാഗദൈവങ്ങൾ എന്നിവർക്കും പ്രത്യേകം സന്നിധികളുണ്ട്.
18 മലകൾക്കു നടുവിലായാണ് ശബരിമല ക്ഷേത്രം സ്ഥിതിചെയ്യുന്നത്. പമ്പാ നദിയുടെ ഉദ്ഭവം ശബരിമലയ്ക്കടുത്തുനിന്നാണ്. നാനാ ജാതിമതസ്ഥർക്കും ഇവിടെ പ്രവേശനം അനുവദനീയമാണ്.
ഇരുമുടിക്കെട്ടുമായി വരുന്നവരെ മാത്രമേ 18 പടികൾ കയറാൻ അനുവദിക്കൂ. നെയ്യഭിഷേകമാണ് ഈ ക്ഷേത്രത്തിലെ പ്രധാന വഴിപാട്. തിരുവിതാംകൂർ ദേവസ്വം ബോർഡിനു കീഴിൽ ഉള്ള ക്ഷേത്രമാണിത്
നവംബർ-ഡിസംബർ മാസങ്ങളിൽ, വൃശ്ചികം ഒന്നുമുതൽ ധനു പതിനൊന്നുവരെ നീളുന്നതും മണ്ഡലക്കാലം എന്നറിയപ്പെടുന്നതുമായ 41 ദിവസങ്ങളാണ് ശബരിമലയിലെ പ്രധാന തീർത്ഥാടനകാലയളവ്.ഇതിനുപുറമേ എല്ലാ മലയാളമാസങ്ങളിലേയും ആദ്യത്തെ അഞ്ചുദിവസങ്ങളിലും ഇവിടെ സന്ദർശനമനുവദിക്കുന്നു.
