This is one of the four major Rama temples in Kerala. The other three are in Thriprayar, Kadavallur, and Thiruvangad. The temple houses an idol of Lakshmana, which is rare in India
കേരളത്തിലെ നാല് പ്രധാന രാമക്ഷേത്രങ്ങളിൽ ഒന്നാണിത്-മറ്റ് മൂന്നെണ്ണം തൃപ്രയാർ, കടവല്ലൂർ, തിരുവങ്ങാട് എന്നിവിടങ്ങളിലാണ്. ഇന്ത്യയിൽ തന്നെ അപൂർവമായ ലക്ഷ്മണ വിഗ്രഹമാണ് ക്ഷേത്രത്തിലുള്ളത്.
വിൽവാദ്രിയിലെത്തിയ പരശുരാമനെ ശിവഭൂതഗണങ്ങൾ സ്വീകരിച്ചു. പരമശിവൻ അവിടെ എത്തിയിട്ടുണ്ടെന്ന് മനസ്സിലാക്കി നേരിട്ട് ചെന്ന് പ്രാർത്ഥിക്കുകയും ആദരിക്കുകയും ചെയ്തു. അസ്വസ്ഥരായ ആത്മാക്കൾക്ക് സമാധാനവും മോചനവും നൽകാൻ സഹായിക്കണമെന്ന് അദ്ദേഹം ശിവനോട് അഭ്യർത്ഥിച്ചു. പരമശിവൻ കൈലാസത്തിൽ ആരാധിച്ചിരുന്ന ഒരു വിഗ്രഹം നൽകുകയും തിരുവില്വാമലയിൽ പ്രതിഷ്‌ഠിക്കാൻ പരശുരാമനോട് ആവശ്യപ്പെടുകയും ചെയ്തു. വില്വാദ്രിനാഥ ക്ഷേത്രത്തിന്റെ കിഴക്കേ നടയിൽ നാം ഇപ്പോൾ കാണുന്ന വിഗ്രഹം ശിവൻ ആരാധിക്കുന്ന അതേ ദിവ്യ വിഗ്രഹമാണ്. ഈ വിഗ്രഹ ദർശനം വഴി ആത്മാക്കൾക്ക് മോക്ഷം ലഭിക്കും.
ശ്രീ വില്വാദ്രിനാഥ ക്ഷേത്രത്തിൽ നിന്ന് ഏകദേശം 2 കിലോമീറ്റർ അകലെയുള്ള മനോഹരമായ പ്രകൃതിദൃശ്യമായ ഭൂതത്താൻ മലയിലാണ് പുനർജനി സ്ഥിതി ചെയ്യുന്നത്. ഈ കുന്നിനുള്ളിൽ താഴെ നിന്ന് മുകളിലേക്ക് 150 മീറ്റർ വരെ നീളുന്ന ഒരു ഗുഹയാണിത്. ഈ ഗുഹയുടെ കടന്നുപോകൽ വളരെ ഇടുങ്ങിയതാണ്, ചുരത്തിലൂടെ കയറാൻ പ്രയാസമാണ്. തിരുവില്വാമലയിലെ പ്രധാന ആകർഷണങ്ങളിലൊന്നാണ് ഇത്. വർഷത്തിൽ ഒരിക്കൽ മാത്രമേ ആളുകൾക്ക് ഗുഹയിൽ പ്രവേശിക്കാൻ അനുവാദമുള്ളൂ. എല്ലാ വർഷവും വൃശ്ചിക (നവംബർ) മാസത്തിലെ ഗുരുവായൂർ ഏകാദശി ദിവസമാണ് അത്. എന്നാൽ മറ്റ് ദിവസങ്ങളിൽ ഈ ഗുഹയുടെ കവാടത്തിനരികിൽ പോയി സ്ഥലത്തിന്റെ ഫോട്ടോ എടുക്കാൻ ഭക്തർക്ക് അനുവാദമുണ്ട്. പരശുരാമന്റെ നിർദ്ദേശപ്രകാരം ദേവശില്പിയായ വിശ്വകർമ്മയാണ് ഈ ഗുഹ നിർമ്മിച്ചതെന്ന് വിശ്വസിക്കപ്പെടുന്നു.
Punarjani is situated in Boothathan Mala, a beautiful land scape, about 2Kms from Sri Vilwadrinatha temple. It is a cave inside this hillfrom bottom to the top which extends to about 150 meters. The passage of this cave is very narrow and it is difficult to climb through the passage. Though it is one of the major attractions of Thiruvilwamala. People are allowed to enter the cave only once in a year. That happens to be the Guruvayur Ekadasi day every year in the month of Vrishchika(November).But on other days devotees are allowed to go near the entrance of this cave and take photos of the place. This cave is believed to have been constructed by Viswakarma the architect of Devas, as per the directives of Lord Parasurama.
