കേരളത്തിലെ പ്രസിദ്ധവും പ്രധാനപെട്ടതുമായ ക്ഷേത്രമാണ് ഗുരുവായൂർ ശ്രീകൃഷ്ണസ്വാമി ക്ഷേത്രം. ദക്ഷിണേന്ത്യയിൽ കേരളത്തിലെ തൃശ്ശൂർ ജില്ലയിൽ ചാവക്കാട് താലൂക്കിൽ സ്ഥിതി ചെയ്യുന്നു.
ഇന്ത്യയിൽ തിരുമല തിരുപ്പതി വെങ്കടേശ്വരക്ഷേത്രം, പുരി ജഗന്നാഥക്ഷേത്രം, ബദരീനാഥ് മഹാവിഷ്ണുക്ഷേത്രം എന്നിവ കഴിഞ്ഞാൽ ഏറ്റവുമധികം തിരക്കുള്ള വൈഷ്ണവ ക്ഷേത്രവും ഇതുതന്നെയാണ്. തൃശ്ശൂർ പട്ടണത്തിൽ നിന്ന്‌ 26 കി.മീ വടക്കു പടിഞ്ഞാറു മാറി ഗുരുവായൂർ പട്ടണത്തിൽ സ്ഥിതിചെയ്യുന്ന ഈ ക്ഷേത്രത്തിലെ മുഖ്യപ്രതിഷ്ഠ ചതുർബാഹുവായ മഹാവിഷ്ണുവാണ്. എന്നിരുന്നാലും മഹാവിഷ്ണുവിന്റെ ഒൻപതാമത്തെ അവതാരമായ ശ്രീകൃഷ്ണന്റെ പേരിലാണ് ഈ ക്ഷേത്രത്തിന്റെ പ്രസിദ്ധി.
ഇവിടെ ഭഗവാനെ 12 ഭാവങ്ങളിൽ ആരാധിയ്ക്കുന്നു, കൂടാതെ പ്രധാന ദിവസങ്ങളിൽ മഹാവിഷ്ണുവിന്റെ അവതാരങ്ങളുടെ രൂപത്തിലുള്ള ചാർത്തിലും ആരാധിക്കപ്പെടുന്നു.
കൃഷ്ണാവതാര സമയത്ത് ദേവകിക്കും വസുദേവർക്കും കാരാഗൃഹത്തിൽ വച്ചു ദർശനം നൽകിയ വിഷ്ണുരൂപമാണ് ഇവിടെയുള്ളതെന്ന് ഭക്തർ വിശ്വസിയ്ക്കുന്നു. ആദ്യകാലത്ത്‌ ഇതൊരു ദേവീക്ഷേത്രമായിരുന്നു. പഴയ ഭഗവതിപ്രതിഷ്ഠയാണ് ഇന്ന് ക്ഷേത്രമതിലകത്ത് വടക്കുകിഴക്കായി കാണപ്പെടുന്ന വനദുർഗ്ഗാഭഗവതി. ഈ ദുർഗ്ഗയാണ് ഗുരുവായൂർ ക്ഷേത്രത്തിന്റെ സംരക്ഷണമൂർത്തി എന്നാണ് വിശ്വാസം.
ക്ഷേത്രത്തിൽ ഉപദേവതകളായി ഗണപതി, അയ്യപ്പൻ, സുബ്രഹ്മണ്യൻ, ഹനുമാൻ, നാഗദൈവങ്ങൾ എന്നിവർക്കും പ്രതിഷ്ഠകളുണ്ട്. കൂടാതെ അദൃശ്യസങ്കല്പമായി ശിവന്റെ ആരാധനയും നടക്കുന്നുണ്ട്. കുംഭമാസത്തിൽ പൂയം നക്ഷത്രദിവസം കൊടിയേറി പത്തുദിവസം നീണ്ടുനിൽക്കുന്ന ഉത്സവമാണ് ക്ഷേത്രത്തിലെ പ്രധാന ആഘോഷം.
കൂടാതെ വൃശ്ചികമാസത്തിൽ വെളുത്ത ഏകാദശി വ്രതം, ചിങ്ങമാസത്തിൽ അഷ്ടമിരോഹിണി, തിരുവോണം, മേടമാസത്തിൽ വിഷു, ധനു 22-നും മകരത്തിലെനാലാമത്തെ ചൊവ്വാഴ്ചയോ വെള്ളിയാഴ്ചയോ ആയും നടക്കുന്ന ഇടത്തരികത്ത് ഭഗവതിയുടെ താലപ്പൊലികൾ എന്നിവയും വിശേഷമാണ്. കേരള സർക്കാർ വകയായ ഗുരുവായൂർ ദേവസ്വമാണ് ക്ഷേത്രഭരണം നടത്തുന്നത്.
