The Kollur Shree Kshetram, situated in Byndoor Taluk of Udupi Disctrict of Karnataka State, is one among the seven abodes of Salvation, in the creation of Parashurama. As per mythology, there are seven Moksha (salvation) Kshethras in the erstwhile Tulu Nadu d by Sage(Lord) Parashurama and the temple established by Adishankaracharya at Kollur is considered to be one among the seven Moksha Kshethras. Here Goddess of power(deity) is worshipped as “Shakthi Devathe” “Mooka” the demon also known as demon Koumasura was destroyed by the deity and hence the name Goddess Mookambhika.
കർണാടക സംസ്ഥാനത്തെ ഉഡുപ്പി ജില്ലയിലെ ബൈന്ദൂർ താലൂക്കിൽ സ്ഥിതി ചെയ്യുന്ന കൊല്ലൂർ ശ്രീ ക്ഷേത്രം പരശുരാമന്റെ സൃഷ്ടിയിൽ മോക്ഷത്തിന്റെ ഏഴ് വാസസ്ഥലങ്ങളിൽ ഒന്നാണ്. ഐതിഹ്യമനുസരിച്ച്, തുളുനാട്ടിൽ മുനി (പ്രഭു) പരശുരാമനാൽ ഏഴ് മോക്ഷ (മോക്ഷ) ക്ഷേത്രങ്ങളുണ്ട്, കൊല്ലൂരിൽ ആദിശങ്കരാചാര്യ സ്ഥാപിച്ച ക്ഷേത്രം ഏഴ് മോക്ഷക്ഷേത്രങ്ങളിൽ ഒന്നായി കണക്കാക്കപ്പെടുന്നു. ഇവിടെ ശക്തി ദേവതയെ (ദൈവം) "ശക്തി ദേവതേ" "മൂക" എന്ന് ആരാധിക്കുന്നു, അസുരൻ കൗമാസുരൻ എന്നും അറിയപ്പെടുന്ന അസുരൻ ദേവനാൽ നശിപ്പിക്കപ്പെട്ടു, അതിനാൽ ദേവി മൂകാംബിക എന്ന പേര് ലഭിച്ചു.
Mookambika is Adishakthi the linga is situated on the left side of the idol of goddess while idols of deities Mahakali, Mahalakshmi and Mahasaraswati are also installed, and her form of the Goddess Adishakthi can be seen only here nowhere else.
To the right of idol of Goddess Mookambike, the idol of deities Lord Bhrahma, Vishnu and Shiva have been installed. A golden chain separates Jyothirlinga into left and right parts. Left part of the “udbhava” lingam represents Shakthi and the right represents Shiva. It is believed that Goddess Devi appeared during penance by Adhishankara and Adishankara established the idol of deity in Sri chakara . The peeta of sage Shankaracharya is found to the west of sanctum Sanctorum. The worship ritual are performed as per vijayagama system founded by Shankaracharya.
Pooja to the deity is performed thrice a day (Thrikala Puja). Devotees travelers come in large numbers during Shravana Masa, mula nakshatra of phalguna masa.
D L Vaille has written that Kollur is one among the important pilgrim center for visitors from within and outside the state. Majority of devotees from outside the state belong to the state of Kerala.
