Thiruvanaikoil temple is one of the Panchabhoota Stalams and represents water. As this temple represents water this is also called as Appu sthalam and the Shivalinga here is called as Appu Linga. Even today you can see water oozing out near the Shivalinga idol in the temple. The goddess of this temple is Akilandeswari (Amman). The Amman is also called as Akilandanyaki. Akilandeswari is pronounced as Akilam - Aanda – Eswari.
Once Parvati mocked Shiva penance for betterment of the world. Shiva wanted to condemn her act and directed her to go to the earth from Kailasam to do penance. Parvathi in the form of Akilandeswari as per Shiva wish found Jambu forest now known as Thiruvanaikoil to conduct her penance. She made a lingam out of water of river Cauvery (also called as river Ponni) under the Venn Naaval tree and commenced her worship. The lingam is known as Appu Lingam. Siva at last gave darshan to Akilandeswari and taught her Siva Gnana. Akilandeswari took Upadesa facing East from Shiva, who stood facing west.

ജലത്തെ പ്രതിനിധീകരിക്കുന്ന പഞ്ചഭൂത സ്‌ഥലങ്ങളിലൊന്നാണ് തിരുവനൈക്കോയിൽ ക്ഷേത്രം. ഈ ക്ഷേത്രം ജലത്തെ പ്രതിനിധീകരിക്കുന്നതിനാൽ ഇതിനെ അപ്പുസ്ഥലം എന്നും ഇവിടെയുള്ള ശിവലിംഗത്തെ അപ്പു ലിംഗം എന്നും വിളിക്കുന്നു. ഇന്നും ക്ഷേത്രത്തിലെ ശിവലിംഗ വിഗ്രഹത്തിന് സമീപം വെള്ളം ഒലിച്ചിറങ്ങുന്നത് കാണാം. ഈ ക്ഷേത്രത്തിലെ ദേവത അഖിലാണ്ഡേശ്വരി (അമ്മൻ) ആണ്. അമ്മൻ അഖിലാണ്ഡന്യകി എന്നും അറിയപ്പെടുന്നു. അഖിലാണ്ഡേശ്വരി അഖിലം - ആന്ദ - ഈശ്വരി എന്നാണ് ഉച്ചരിക്കുന്നത്.
ഒരിക്കൽ പാർവതി ലോകനന്മയ്ക്കുവേണ്ടിയുള്ള ശിവ തപസ്സിനെ പരിഹസിച്ചു. അവളുടെ പ്രവൃത്തിയെ അപലപിക്കാൻ ശിവൻ ആഗ്രഹിച്ചു, തപസ്സുചെയ്യാൻ കൈലാസത്തിൽ നിന്ന് ഭൂമിയിലേക്ക് പോകാൻ അവരോട് നിർദ്ദേശിച്ചു. ശിവന്റെ ആഗ്രഹപ്രകാരം അഖിലാണ്ടേശ്വരി രൂപത്തിലുള്ള പാർവതി തപസ്സനുഷ്ഠിക്കുന്നതിനായി ഇപ്പോൾ തിരുവനൈക്കോയിൽ എന്നറിയപ്പെടുന്ന ജംബു വനം കണ്ടെത്തി. കാവേരി നദിയിലെ (പൊന്നി നദി എന്നും അറിയപ്പെടുന്നു) വെൺ നാവൽ മരത്തിന്റെ ചുവട്ടിൽ അവൾ ഒരു ലിംഗം ഉണ്ടാക്കി ആരാധന ആരംഭിച്ചു. അപ്പു ലിംഗം എന്നാണ് ഈ ലിംഗം അറിയപ്പെടുന്നത്. ഒടുവിൽ ശിവൻ അഖിലാണ്ടേശ്വരിയെ ദർശനം ചെയ്യുകയും ശിവജ്ഞാനം പഠിപ്പിക്കുകയും ചെയ്തു. പടിഞ്ഞാറോട്ട് ദർശനമായി നിന്ന ശിവനിൽ നിന്ന് കിഴക്കോട്ട് അഭിമുഖമായി അഖിലാണ്ടേശ്വരി ഉപദേശം സ്വീകരിച്ചു.
ജംബുകേശ്വര (ശിവൻ), അഖിലാണ്ഡേശ്വരി (പാർവ്വതി) എന്നിവയാണ് പ്രധാന ദേവതകൾ.
